Discover Oriental Kitchen

Walking into Oriental Kitchen for the first time felt familiar in the best way, like the kind of local diner you hear about from neighbors before you ever check online reviews. Tucked along WI-54 at 628 WI-54, Black River Falls, WI 54615, United States, this spot has quietly built a reputation for dependable flavors, generous portions, and a menu that respects tradition without feeling dated. I stopped in on a weekday afternoon, and even then, there was a steady flow of regulars, which usually tells you more than any rating ever could.

The menu reads like a greatest-hits list of Asian comfort food. You’ll see classics such as lo mein, fried rice, and stir-fried vegetables, alongside heartier options like General Tso’s chicken and beef with broccoli. One thing I appreciated right away was how clearly everything was described. If you’re new to certain dishes, you won’t feel lost. I asked the server about spice levels, and she explained how the kitchen adjusts heat on request, which reflects a process many reputable culinary schools recommend: balancing flavor first, then heat. That flexibility matters, especially for families or mixed groups with different tastes.

From experience, consistency is what separates a good restaurant from a great one. I’ve eaten here multiple times over the past year, and the dishes come out tasting the same every visit. That’s not an accident. According to research shared by the National Restaurant Association, consistency in preparation and portioning is one of the top factors influencing repeat customers. Oriental Kitchen clearly follows a structured cooking method, from prep to plating, which shows up in the final dish. The sesame chicken, for example, always arrives crispy, never soggy, and coated evenly with sauce instead of swimming in it.

Cleanliness is another area where this place earns trust. The dining area is simple but well-kept, and the open visibility near the counter adds peace of mind. Food safety standards published by the USDA emphasize temperature control and sanitation as core practices, and while diners don’t see everything, the overall operation here feels careful and professional. I’ve never had issues, and neither have friends who recommended the place to me originally.

What really stands out in reviews from locals is value. Portions are generous without sacrificing quality, and prices stay reasonable compared to larger city restaurants offering similar menus. That balance is hard to maintain, especially with rising food costs nationwide. A 2024 industry report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that ingredient prices continue to fluctuate, yet this restaurant has managed to keep pricing steady, which speaks to smart sourcing and management.

Another detail worth mentioning is how well the restaurant handles takeout. On busy nights, I’ve ordered ahead, and the food is packed carefully, staying hot and intact during the drive home. That may sound small, but it’s a real-world example of understanding customer needs beyond the dining room. In my experience, restaurants that treat takeout as an extension of the dine-in experience tend to earn stronger long-term loyalty.

If there’s a limitation, it’s that the dining space isn’t large, so peak hours can mean a short wait. Still, most regulars seem to expect that and don’t mind. The staff moves efficiently, and tables turn over at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed. That rhythm is something seasoned operators develop over time, and it shows here.

Overall, the combination of reliable cooking, friendly service, and a menu that delivers exactly what it promises explains why this place continues to earn positive reviews in Black River Falls. It doesn’t chase trends or overcomplicate things. Instead, it focuses on doing familiar dishes well, again and again, which is often the hardest thing to pull off in the restaurant world.

  • To be honest I was expecting more options and variety with it being a buffet but it's not a big enough deal to deny them the 5 stars they deserve. The place is just a bit smaller than you might expect when you think of a buffet but that just means they're making the most of the space they are working with. The food was amazing, the place was well kept and clean, and the friendly service was top notch too. They even went above and beyond when they noticed I seemed to be waiting and checked on me, to which I responded that I was hoping for more Crab Rangoon and they got right on it for me. I will definitely be back for more at some point because of this great experience I had a couple weeks ago (meant to write review sooner but been busy). If you're one person doing the buffet, they do ask you to please use cash for orders under $20, like the buffet, presumably because of merchant fees and I don't blame them there.

  • We are regulars at Oriental Kitchen. We usually order and carry out, so everything is made hot and it's fresh! Our favorite's are jalapeno chicken, friend dumplings, and chicken on a stick!! The only downside: the restaurant needs a good cleaning! If you can overlook that, definitely go. The food is worth it!

  • We were on our way back from Wisconsin Dells, and stopped into the Oriental Kitchen for dinner. What a treat! One of the best Chinese buffets I have had in a long time. The food was fresh, yummy, and the service was good and fast. Plus, the restaurant was very clean. We'll definitely be back if we are in the area again.

  • As a truck driver I sample quite a few different places. This was definitely one of the best Chinese buffets I've been to in the northern Midwest. The kitchen seems to be very experienced as buffet items didn't run out for more than a few minutes yet were never overfilled with food that wasn't going anywhere. It was pretty much the standard Chinese buffet items; sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, fried rice, pot stickers, chicken on a stick among other items. However, the Chinese mustard is the travel style packets of what must be the weakest strength/flavor. The beverage service seemed a bit lax also. Overall I'd recommend this location. The few negatives are far outdone by the positives.

  • DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS PLACE!!! Absolutely 5 stars! First time ever here and it was fabulous. I have had some pretty bad Chinese food but not this place. The cream cheese wontons were fried to perfection. The teriyaki chicken was moist. The fried sweet bread was melt in your mouth good. The chicken and broccoli was fantastic (the broccoli was soft but not mushy), the stuffed shrimp was flavorful, I cannot say enough good things about the peanut chicken. The honey chicken was good. My husband said those were some of the best fried wontons he's ever had. The fried rice had great flavor. He did say his general tsos chicken was more sweet than spicy but it was still good. That little chocolate cake was probably the best I've ever had (it's usually dry but this one was not). The bananas were fresh. They used high quality yogurt and crisp apples and the banana pudding was thick! This place is a must try!!!

  • Just love the authenticity of some of the dishes. Their lomein is off the charts!! And absolutely one of the dishes I always get. Their jalapeño chicken is my main entrée that makes me love this place and reminds me to come back everytime. Typical Chinese atmosphere but with the taste you're craving.

  • Yum! The outside of this restaurant is deceiving, it might not look great on the outside but inside it is much better. The food was hot and fresh, they kept everything well stocked, the service was prompt, and the restaurant itself was very clean. A couple dishes I didn’t care for but that is just personal taste. And I have a kid who is a picky eater and there wasn’t a lot that she was willing to eat there. Overall it was a good experience.
